In WWII the phrase “Vatican Cameos” was used when a person who was not in the British army came before the general, or other high up ranks, as a signal to the other officers that the person was armed.

So when Sherlock says “Vatican Cameos” to warn John that the safe has a gun in it, it’s not something that they’ve set up as a code word- It’s a code Sherlock knew John would know- being a soldier!

Ratman is my favorite character in Portal. You never actually see him, and sometimes he quite frankly scared the crap out of me, but he was always there for me. In the background. Behind the scenes. Falling apart inside, getting shot at, going insane, starving and sleepless. He could have left. He could have just escaped the enrichment center when he realized the A.I. went bad and people started dropping like flies. He could have ran. But he didn’t. He stayed behind and set Chell free because he thought she had a chance of fixing everything, and did everything in his power to help her escape. Even in a lot of his unsettling schizophrenic graffiti, there is a sense of tenderness there. With companion cube as his only friend, who he believes in his crazed mind is actually speaking to him. I hope he made it out alive.

Doug himself is the Schrödinger’s Cat now of Portal. He must be both alive and dead until the metaphorical box is opened, and while the timelines have been split there is no way to determine which of the two is correct. We are left to wait and hope but in a sense also pray they never tell us on the off-chance that he is dead. While the comic itself tried to tell us that Chell was the cat, now that Portal 2 is out the true brillance appears that the only fate we don’t know now is Doug. And perhaps they writers meant for it to be that way.

Today’s lesson: Be more like this guy. Remind yourself that you’re not the center of the universe. If everyone just put themselves in other people’s shoes instead of only looking out for himself, then perhaps we’d all stop treating each other like crap.

Even if you’re selfish, there’s a reason not to be. Treat others poorly, and they in turn will treat others poorly. This keeps being transferred like a disease until one day it comes back to you and someone treats you poorly. So helping others benefits you as well. The benefits are just not as immediate.
